Winding Down, Gearing Up

It’s hard to believe, but it’s that time of the year again - SPRING! With warmer weather in the forecast and a little over a month left until summer vacation, many administrators struggle to find time to get everything done to finish up the school year. This time crunch makes it especially hard to research ways to help their teachers reflect on the year while also inspiring them to try & learn new things over the summer. If that’s you, then you are in luck! Below are a few easy ways that my schools “WIND DOWN” and “GEAR UP” for the new school year. Enjoy!


  • Cleaning House: The end of the year is the perfect time to make sure that teachers have cleaned up all of their technology spaces too - not just their physical classrooms. One easy way to help teachers do this is by sending them “how-to” videos and/or guides for how to clean up and get organized for next year. Think of how much less stress your teachers will have in the fall when they are able to come back and start fresh and organized! If your school has implemented G Suite, check out the following resources: how to clean up your Drive, Classroom, and Gmail.  
  • Reflect, Reflect, Reflect: While we encourage our students to reflect on a daily basis, how often do we provide opportunities for our teachers to recognize and celebrate their own growth? How do we support them as they identify opportunities for improvement?We all know how important personal reflection is to growth, but finding new ways to reflect that are active and engaging can be challenging! Here are two awesome protocols that we often use with teachers to encourage reflection and growth: Triangle, Square, Circle & Wagon Wheel Protocol.  
(BONUS TIP:  Model this for your teachers by reflecting on your year as their administrator.)


  • Make Learning Convenient and Fun: I know, Professional Development is the one thing that we all look most forward to during the summer...SAID NO TEACHER EVER! So, let’s find ways to meet teachers where they are at during the summer - at the pool, in their PJs, with their kids/families, on vacation, etc. while also making it easy, engaging, meaningful, and fun!   • Create a Challenge With Choices: Speaking of fun, who doesn’t like a good game or challenge (especially with an incentive attached. Jeans Day, anyone?)? Our schools have had a lot of success with using a BINGO CARD or TIC-TAC-TOE BOARD to challenge teachers to try and learn new skills by empowering them to choose what they want to learn about and share that learning with others!
